I've been trying to post this for over a week, and the program just now seems to be cooperating. I loved this little sweater from the moment that I saw it - the cute little rolled cuff at the neck, the cute tie and side, and the organic-ness of the two front flaps. The actual knitting up bit went swimmingly - the instructions were very easy to understand and the knitting went very quickly. I had never really seemed anything before, but Katrina was super helpful and I must admit that I am super-proud of my stockinette seams. Find the seam. I dare you!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_uxecem0PYEA/SAL-Ml99DdI/AAAAAAAAAEE/ezUugnF5_HY/s320/IMG_0530.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5188989212988083666" />

Unfortunately, I became rather disenchanted after I got the whole thing sewn together (but without the i-cord attached or the ends of the strings sewn in). The sleeves stick straight out from the sides of the body, and the whole thing seems a little big for a 0-3 month old baby (which is what I was supposed to be knitting for). It was at this point that I really looked at the label for the first time and discovered that Cotton Fleece is supposed to be dry clean only. I had mistakenly assumed that anything with cotton in its name would be machine washable. I figured that there was no way that this baby's Mama was going to have the time or motivation to dry clean this sweater, so into the washing machine and dryer it went. If it's going to disintegrate or felt when it gets washed, I would much rather that it do so on my watch. Luckily it survived the laundering just great, although all those strings I hadn't bothered to weave in were now ratty looking. As much as I hate weaving in ends, I especially dislike weaving in ratty-looking ends. So the poor little sweater sat on my laundry pile for two weeks, and glared at me everytime I walked by. For goodness sakes - the whole thing was sewn together and all it need was 30 minutes attention to be actually be finished. The longer I put it off, the more I disliked the scrawny ends and the way that the sleeves stood out from the body.

However, after telling my mother that the package would be in the mail on Monday I figured I should get my act together and finish the silly little sweater. And lo and behold - just like the tree at the end of the Charlie Brown's Christmas Movie - all the sweater needed was a little love.

In its new tidy incarnation, I find the little garter stitch edging riveting,

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_uxecem0PYEA/SAMAlV99DeI/AAAAAAAAAEM/c6I8mJiA8yk/s320/IMG_0531.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5188991837213101538" />

the ties adorably cute,

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_uxecem0PYEA/SAMBVV99DfI/AAAAAAAAAEU/9ZeULdbY5kw/s320/IMG_0523.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5188992661846822386" />

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_uxecem0PYEA/SAbjzV99DlI/AAAAAAAAAFE/UZbaUbYoWQI/s320/IMG_0525.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5190086091800907346" />

and the sleeve seam perfection itself.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_uxecem0PYEA/SAgzbV99DmI/AAAAAAAAAFM/y8-yNDZJPbY/s320/IMG_0520.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5190455115390979682" />

I even made little booties to accompany it.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_uxecem0PYEA/SAkyJV99DoI/AAAAAAAAAFc/3VPu16qKRLg/s320/IMG_0537.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5190735181618417282" />

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_uxecem0PYEA/SAkyll99DpI/AAAAAAAAAFk/w5dd21aWVyY/s320/IMG_0540.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5190735666949721746" />

Baby Mary Jane Booties in Rowan 4-Ply Cotton. Apparently after I went to bed two nights ago my husband and roommates decided that in case of famine it was important to know which cat to eat first. So, they had a test run. Apparently Cicero was quite willing to participate, but Socrates, sensing that something bad was afoot, refused to be sized for any of the pots in my kitchen.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_uxecem0PYEA/R_ZjC0KFXaI/AAAAAAAAADk/D2Wa0p_2LAI/s320/IMG_0386.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5185440920975531426" />

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_uxecem0PYEA/R_ZjmEKFXbI/AAAAAAAAADs/5fxyrtECrPc/s320/IMG_0392.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5185441526565920178" />

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_uxecem0PYEA/R_ZkKkKFXcI/AAAAAAAAAD0/QXaJDzDd_hE/s320/IMG_0394.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5185442153631145410" />

Luckily, I am pretty sure that I at least am far too large to fit in any of my own pots.....

Whew....

I have a good excuse...I promise. My new camera, my husband, my roommates, and even the memory card from my old ghetto camera went on spring break for a week and half in mid-March. They were here (well, ok, one roommate went to Hawaii - everybody(thing) else went to the British Virgin Islands).

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_uxecem0PYEA/R_WqsUKFXUI/AAAAAAAAAC0/bhUvpRvNewA/s320/IMG_0352.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5185238224288963906" />

And I wasn't bitter one bit that I was left here and that it rained the whole time they were gone. And I certainly wasn't bitter that I had to cat-sit for our friend's very grumpy 19 year old cat that apparently isn't very fond of other animals. And I especially wasn't bitter that they were running late for the airport and left the house a complete disaster.

Once I got the house clean (the house hadn't been this clean since we moved in 10 months ago) I continued on the home-improvement theme. I figured that by leaving they gave their implicit consent for whatever changes I might dream up.

So I painted these to go over the couch:

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_uxecem0PYEA/R_WvHUKFXVI/AAAAAAAAAC8/aoX4G6zGvmM/s320/IMG_0444.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5185243086191942994" />

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_uxecem0PYEA/R_WwYUKFXWI/AAAAAAAAADE/uojRlXO5Elg/s320/IMG_0446.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5185244477761346914" />

These paintings make me so very, very happy. I had never painted anything before, but I figured that it couldn't be that difficult. It's just paint and canvas, right? And since I had decided to paint quilt squares, I could just trace the patterns onto the canvas and then paint over them. In my family, the phrase "all you've got to do is..." is a recipe for disaster. Honestly, it usually ends with someone sitting in the floor in tears. So, it was a surprising change for this project to actually be even easier than I expected.

I also made these to go in our bedroom:

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_uxecem0PYEA/R_WxsEKFXXI/AAAAAAAAADM/6V3WwaEOd8A/s320/IMG_0459.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5185245916575391090" />

I bought the fabric for these back in the Fall, but was very sad to discover when I finished the first panel that they had cut the fabric 18 inches too short. With all this peace and quiet I finally managed to finish the second panel and bought more fabric to go at the bottom. The curtains are lined with black-out fabric, so they are finished just in time for the sun to start coming up at 5 am!

Oh, I also made this:

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_uxecem0PYEA/R_W2PkKFXYI/AAAAAAAAADU/K3Kj_vuQAkU/s320/IMG_0431.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5185250924507258242" />

And I started this:

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_uxecem0PYEA/R_W3GEKFXZI/AAAAAAAAADc/70gSqRKtX_0/s320/IMG_0416.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5185251860810128786" />

So, now that they're back and the house is trashed and they're eating all my food as fast as I can fix...I'm kind of wondering when they'll leave again....

Somebody Had a Busy Day

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_uxecem0PYEA/R84tQW8hLDI/AAAAAAAAAB8/jnRUeXH7vJY/s320/IMG_0339.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5174122780955847730" />

While Ben and I were busy at a coffee shop all day (I was relentlessly reading about thymidine and folate and he was studying epidemiology), it seems that back at the ranch two kittens were also very busy. Amazingly enough, NONE of the yarn had been chewed on or eaten, so other than being a bit linty (what can I say, we're busy and vaccuming hasn't been at the top of anybody's list) the yarn is no worse for the wear. I was planning on showing off some new projects today, but I figured this yarnapalooza took preference. But, I promise, next time there will be plenty of yarn to look at in all sorts of pretty patterns, not as part of giant knots in my floor.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_uxecem0PYEA/R843yW8hLJI/AAAAAAAAACs/dEAJorfVGLg/s320/IMG_0346.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5174134360187677842" />

I'm Baaack

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_uxecem0PYEA/R8sLCo2TenI/AAAAAAAAAB0/K__ok-TFBAs/s320/IMG_0099.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5173240736917977714" />
On my way home from Christmas break my camera apparently got crunched in my luggage (I say apparently because we think it happened in the luggage - the camera definitely got crunched). I finally got it replaced with a snazzy new Canon S5 that has tons of features I haven't learned how to use yet. I would include a picture, but, well, that would require a second working camera, which I don't have. I have tons of new projects and yarn (including the now-infamous Hill Top Yarn Fire sale), which means it should be pretty interesting reading as I play catch-up.

But, to begin, I wanted to show off a pattern that I had created over Christmas while watching football with my family. If you really want to impress non-knitters, designing and completing a scarf during a 4-hour football game is a great way to go about it. I call this scarf Serafine and the instructions are here. I love this pattern and the bulky yarn means that it is stiff enough to actually stand up underneath a coat, keeping my neck toasty warm and showing of a little bit of the color and texture. The Nashua Creative Focus Chunky I used is a bit itchy, but it is also inexpensive and colorful and warm. I've worn this scarf quite a bit and it is holding up very well, in addition to getting compliments from almost everyone who sees it. Not bad for 4 hours and a $9 ball of yarn.

No Time for Pictures

There are now 40 knitting days left until Christmas. 40. And about 36 left for me to finish up everything I need to in lab before we leave to go to Texas for the holidays. And, of course, on top of the two lace shawls I need to finish for my mom and mother-in-law, as well as the scarf I need to start and finish for my sister for her Dec 8 college graduation, I decided that this year it would be a great idea for me to make all of our Christmas cards. And next Tuesday my father-in-law and sister-in-law arrive for a week. Must knit. Must pipette. Must make Christmas cards. I am going to need a vacation before all of this is said and done.

Silly Pictures

It seems that everything around me has been conspiring to keep me from posting for the last 2 weeks. I have a couple of FOs to share, but unfortunately about the time that I finished them Winter arrived in Seattle. I kept waiting for "natural light" so the colors would at least be somewhat accurate, but with the "sun" coming up at 8, setting at 4:45, and constant cloud cover all day long, it may be quite a few months before I can take a decent picture again. Or I'm going to have to start taking FOs to lab, so I can dash outside if the sun manages to break through the clouds for a couple seconds.

Of course, once I finally gave in and took a picture using indoor lighting, the blog refused to upload the pictures. So, without further ado:

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_uxecem0PYEA/RzUuxc_bomI/AAAAAAAAABk/qAbrSzFuBdY/s320/IMG_0098.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5131058777589260898" />

This is the first half of the wrap I am making my mother for Christmas. The yarn is Handmaiden Sea Silk in Bronze, and when I bought it in July after my General Exams it was the most expensive yarn I had ever purchased (that title has now been claimed by that tiny skein of Handmaiden Swiss Mountain Cashmere and Silk that I used for my grey scarf). Unfortunately, I kept changing my mind about the pattern and ripping it back. I finally settled on a design in late September and it has come along fairly well since then. It is my first completed lace-ish project, and I feel like it turned out very well. Especially since I had never, ever blocked anything before. The event featured Hand Maiden and Fleece Artist, super-nice yarns that are handpainted by a mother-daughter team in Canada. I already had 2 skeins of their sea silk and I wanted another two skeins for a similar project. The first two skeins I bought I happened upon this summer, and they just happened to be the last two skeins in the shop (the fact that the whole shipment had arrived less than 24 hours before I bought the last 2 skeins should tell you something about the popularity of this yarn).

Now, I am usually not an impulse yarn buyer. In fact, I don't go into yarn shops unless I specifically know what color and type of yarn I am looking for. So, understandably, my self control held the spending in check - that is, until I actually arrived at the yarn shop. And then the excitement and the pretty colors and the 20% off and the jealous thought that someone else was going to take that skein home got to me. So, in the end, I rescued 5 poor skeins from having to go home with anyone else. And then I got home and did a little math. I. BOUGHT. 2. KILOMETERS. OF. YARN.

Previously, the Sea Silk I bought this summer was the most expensive yarn I had ever purchased. That little silver ball of 65% cashmere and 35% silk now holds that title. A warning to you all: if you pick up this yarn you will buy it, so touch at your own peril. The red and the green are both Casbah - 80% merino, 10% cashmere, and 10% nylon. Please do not ask me what I am going to do with them. The fact that I, myself, do not know means that instead of working on all of the Christmas presents in progress what I really want to do is sit down and play with this new yarn. Say it with me now... Christmas presents. Christmas presents. Christmas presents. We'll see how long I last.

For Knitting Eyes Only

So, welcome to my new super-secret knitting blog.
